Two adult patients with severe vision loss regained some fusion ability after strabismus surgery and prism glasses. Treatments helped correct binocular sensory deprivation, reducing diplopia and central fusion disruption symptoms.

Background:

  • Binocular sensory deprivation can lead to loss of fusion ability and intractable diplopia.
  • Traumatic cataracts and uncorrected unilateral aphakia are significant causes of prolonged binocular sensory deprivation.

Observation:

  • Two adult patients presented with complete loss of fusion ability and symptoms of central fusion disruption.
  • Both patients had a history of binocular sensory deprivation due to traumatic cataracts and uncorrected unilateral aphakia.

Findings:

  • Surgical correction of aphakia (intraocular lens or contact lens) and adjustable strabismus surgery improved visual axis alignment.
  • The addition of prism glasses in one patient further aided visual alignment.
  • Following treatment, both patients demonstrated partial recovery of fusion with small amplitudes, and the characteristic vertical bobbing associated with central fusion disruption resolved.
