Depth perception is the ability to perceive objects three-dimensionally. It relies on two types of cues: binocular and monocular. Binocular cues depend on the combination of images from both eyes and how the eyes work together. Since the eyes are in slightly different positions, each eye captures a slightly different image. This disparity between images, known as binocular disparity, helps the brain interpret depth. When the brain compares these images, it determines the distance to an object.

Summary

Binocular vision is frequently impaired in multiple sclerosis (MS), particularly affecting divergence at near distance and stereopsis. Patients with optic neuritis experienced more significant binocular vision deficits.

Background:

  • Oculomotor disorders affect up to 80% of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.
  • Binocular vision studies are lacking in MS, despite known eye-movement anomalies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate binocular vision function in individuals with multiple sclerosis.
  • To identify specific binocular vision deficits in MS patients, including those with optic neuritis.

Main Methods:

  • Compared binocular vision in 59 MS patients (with/without optic neuritis) and 26 controls.
  • Assessed near point of convergence (NPC), fusional vergence, heterophoria, and stereopsis.

Main Results:

  • MS patients exhibited higher rates of abnormal NPC and altered stereopsis.
  • Negative fusional vergence was significantly impaired in MS patients, especially those with optic neuritis.
  • MS patients showed a near esophoric trend and increased variability in vergence recovery.

Conclusions:

  • Binocular vision is significantly altered in MS, with near divergence and stereopsis being most affected.
  • Optic neuritis exacerbates binocular vision impairments in MS patients.
