Background:

  • Healthcare spending in the U.S. is substantial, yet medical interventions influence only 16% of health outcomes.
  • Social determinants, behaviors, and the environment significantly impact the remaining 84% of health outcomes.
  • Medical schools are increasingly recognizing the importance of addressing social determinants of health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe an academic community engagement unit's unique methods for partnering with the community to improve health.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a community-driven 'Call for Ideas' initiative in identifying and addressing health problems.

Main Methods:

  • An annual 'Call for Ideas' solicited health problems and solutions from community members.
  • A joint panel of community members and academic researchers reviewed and selected feasible, scalable ideas.
  • Financial, project development, and evaluation support was provided for selected initiatives.

Main Results:

  • Three Calls for Ideas generated 268 submissions from 249 individuals, with a focus on social/behavioral factors and health behaviors.
  • Half of the ideas originated from individuals, and half from community service organizations.
  • 24 ideas (9%) were selected for implementation; 19 have been successfully implemented, with 5 in development.

Conclusions:

  • Individuals with lived experience are crucial in identifying community health barriers and effective interventions.
  • Academic-community partnerships built on trust, mutual benefit, and respect for lived experience can meet diverse needs.
  • Recognizing power dynamics and structural biases is essential for successful community health initiatives.
