The Zeiss Extaro 300 dental operating microscope (DOM) offers superior resolution and depth of field compared to Seiler IQ and Global G-Series models. This study evaluated key performance metrics for these DOM systems.
Area of Science:
- Dental Technology
- Ophthalmic Optics
- Medical Imaging
Background:
- Resolution and depth of field are critical performance metrics for dental operating microscopes (DOMs).
- Evaluating and comparing these parameters across different DOM models is essential for clinical effectiveness.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate and compare the resolution and depth of field of DOMs from three leading manufacturers.
- To determine which DOM system offers superior optical performance for dental applications.
Main Methods:
- Standardized resolution (1951 USAF Hi-Resolution Target) and depth of field (Depth of Field Target 5-15) tests were conducted.
- Two calibrated observers assessed three DOM systems: Seiler IQ, Global G-Series 6 step, and Zeiss Extaro 300.
Main Results:
- The Zeiss Extaro 300 demonstrated the highest maximum resolution (64 lp/mm) and depth of field (17mm).
- The Seiler IQ exhibited the lowest maximum resolution (35.9 lp/mm) and depth of field (11mm).
Conclusions:
- The Zeiss Extaro 300 outperformed the Seiler IQ and Global G-Series DOMs in both resolution and depth of field.
- These findings suggest the Zeiss Extaro 300 provides enhanced visualization capabilities in dentistry.

Phase Contrast and Differential Interference Contrast Microscopy
In-phase-contrast microscopes, interference between light directly passing through a cell and light refracted by cellular components is used to create high-contrast, high-resolution images without staining. It is the oldest and simplest type of microscope that creates an image by altering the wavelengths of light rays passing through the specimen. Altered wavelength paths are created using an annular stop in the condenser. The annular stop produces a hollow cone of...
