  • Contact dermatitis is frequently linked to homemade slime, with isothiazolinones suspected as the sensitizer.
  • Limited data exists on isothiazolinone presence in commercial slime products.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Review literature on "slime dermatitis."
  • Assess for isothiazolinones in commercial slimes and homemade slime components.

Main Methods:

  • Colorimetric spot test used on 38 commercial slimes, 1 homemade slime, and 4 components.
  • High-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection performed on 8 commercial slimes.

Main Results:

  • Spot test indicated isothiazolinones in 71% of commercial slimes.
  • HPLC-UV analysis revealed false-positives/negatives, correctly identifying isothiazolinones in only 50% of tested samples.

Conclusions:

  • First study to detect isothiazolinones in commercial slime toys.
  • Colorimetric spot test has limited utility as a specific and sensitive assay for methylisothiazolinone detection.
