Background:

  • Numerous field-test devices exist for assessing vertical jump performance.
  • Existing devices often lack comprehensive validation or are validated only for the countermovement jump (CMJ).
  • Accurate measurement of jump height and reactive strength index (RSI) is crucial for training and performance evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the validity and reliability of four different devices (Optojump, Push-Band 2.0, MyJump2, What'sMyVert) for measuring vertical jump height and RSI.
  • To compare these devices against a force platform as the criterion measure.
  • To assess performance across three jump modalities: countermovement jump (CMJ), squat jump (SQJ), and drop jump (DJ).

Main Methods:

  • Thirty participants (17 males, 13 females) performed five repetitions of CMJ, SQJ, and DJ.
  • Four devices (Optojump, Push-Band 2.0, MyJump2, What'sMyVert) were used synchronously with a force platform.
  • Relative reliability (ICC) and absolute reliability (CV) were analyzed, with excellent reliability defined as ICC > 0.9 and CV < 10%.

Main Results:

  • All instruments demonstrated excellent reliability for jump height in CMJ (ICC ≥ 0.98, CV ≤ 8.14%).
  • MyJump2 and What'sMyVert apps showed excellent validity for all jump modalities and RSI.
  • Optojump and Push-Band 2.0 exhibited systematic and proportional bias for several jump types and RSI, while all devices showed excellent relative reliability for RSI but lacked excellent absolute reliability.

Conclusions:

  • Mobile applications MyJump2 and What'sMyVert provide a valid, reliable, and cost-effective means for coaches to measure various vertical jumps and RSI.
  • The Optojump and Push-Band 2.0 devices may introduce bias in jump performance measurements.
  • These findings support the use of smartphone applications for accessible and accurate athletic performance assessment.
