Anabolic steroid use may worsen COVID-19 severity. A case study showed a patient on oxandrolone experienced severe symptoms, but improved after proxalutamide treatment.
Area of Science:
- Internal Medicine
- Pharmacology
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) use is prevalent among bodybuilders.
- COVID-19 can present with varying severity, even in young, healthy individuals.
Observation:
- A 28-year-old male bodybuilder using oxandrolone (40 mg/day) presented with severe COVID-19 symptoms.
- Symptoms rapidly worsened over 4 days despite being otherwise healthy.
Findings:
- The patient received a single 600 mg dose of proxalutamide, a novel antiandrogen, as part of an experimental treatment.
- Within 24 hours, significant improvement in COVID-19 symptoms and disease severity markers was observed.
Implications:
- This case is the first to suggest a potential link between anabolic steroid use and increased COVID-19 severity.
- Further research is warranted to explore the role of androgens in COVID-19 pathogenesis and treatment.

Pulmonary Tuberculosis I
Causative Organism
The primary infectious agent causing tuberculosis is Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a slow-growing, acid-fast, aerobic rod that exhibits sensitivity to heat and ultraviolet light. Instances of Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium avium contributing to the development of TB infection are rare.

Exercise and Cardiovascular Response
Light to moderate physical activity initiates a series of interconnected responses in the body. The heart rate modestly increases in anticipation of the workout, followed by widespread vasodilation as oxygen consumption by skeletal muscles increases. This results in decreased peripheral resistance, increased capillary blood flow, and accelerated...

Adrenal Gland Disorders
Adrenal insufficiency, characterized by insufficient cortisol and aldosterone production, leads to conditions like Addison's disease. This disorder, affecting the adrenal cortex, exhibits symptoms such as skin bronzing, dehydration, low blood pressure, fatigue, and weight loss. Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection
The integrity and count of the white blood cells help the body resist pathogens and fight infection. When impaired, it reduces the body's resistance to pathogens. The acidic pH levels of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary tracts, and skin...
