Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

565
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Subliminal Perception01:15

Subliminal Perception

503
Subliminal perception refers to the processing of sensory information that occurs below the level of conscious awareness. Researchers study subliminal perception by presenting a stimulus, such as a word or image, very quickly, typically around 50 milliseconds. This rapid presentation is often followed by another stimulus, such as a pattern of dots or lines, which blocks further mental processing of the initial stimulus. As a result, if participants cannot identify the initial stimulus better...

Summary

While the Hypnotic Suggestibility Scale (HGSHS:A) can measure direct verbal suggestibility (DVS), new scales are needed. Current scales may oversimplify the complex nature of suggestibility, necessitating updated measurement approaches.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • The Hypnotic Suggestibility Scale (HGSHS:A) is proposed by Oakley et al. (2021) as a tool to measure direct verbal suggestibility (DVS).
  • Direct verbal suggestibility (DVS) is considered a trait measurable with or without hypnosis.
