Hallucinogens and Psychedelics01:27

Hallucinogens and Psychedelics

399
Hallucinogens are psychoactive substances that profoundly alter perceptual experiences, generating unreal visual and sensory images. Often referred to as psychedelic drugs — a term derived from the Greek words "psyche" (mind) and "delos" (revealing) — these substances include marijuana and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), among others. These drugs vary in intensity and effects.
Marijuana, derived from the dried leaves and flowers of the hemp plant, contains...

CNS Stimulants: Psychedelic Agents

379
Hallucinogens, also known as psychedelic drugs, are a class of substances known for their ability to alter perception, cognition, and emotions. Despite their profound effects on the mind, these drugs are non-addictive, setting them apart from many other abused substances. The mechanism of action of these drugs lies in their impact on the 5-HT2A receptor in the brain. Upon activation, this receptor couples to Gq-type G proteins, triggering a cascade that releases intracellular calcium. This...

Blinding01:11

Blinding

3.7K
Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Altered States of Awareness01:06

Altered States of Awareness

752
Altered states of consciousness represent significant deviations from one's normal mental state. These deviations can range from subtle changes in awareness to profound transformations in perception, thought processes, and sensory experiences. Altered states of consciousness can be triggered by various factors, including drug use, meditation, hypnosis, illness, or even intense fatigue.
The ingestion of substances like stimulants or hallucinogens leads to chemical alterations in the brain...

Blind Procedures02:07

Blind Procedures

12.5K
Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias. Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. If the observers knew which...

The Placebo Effect01:54

The Placebo Effect

6.6K
The placebo effect occurs when people's expectations or beliefs influence or determine their experience in a given situation. In other words, simply expecting something to happen can actually make it happen.

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Microdosing, the regular use of low-dose psychedelics, showed no significant benefits over placebo in a large citizen science trial. Psychological improvements in both groups suggest the placebo effect may explain anecdotal microdosing benefits.

Area of Science:

  • Psychopharmacology
  • Citizen Science
  • Psychedelic Research

Background:

  • Microdosing psychedelics is an emerging practice with anecdotal reports of enhanced well-being and cognition.
  • Potential placebo effects may bias self-reported outcomes in microdosing studies.
  • Large-scale, placebo-controlled trials are needed to validate these subjective experiences.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of microdosing psychedelics in a placebo-controlled setting.
  • To assess whether observed benefits of microdosing exceed the placebo effect.
  • To leverage citizen science for a large-scale psychedelic trial.

Main Methods:

  • A self-blinding citizen science initiative with 191 participants undertaking a 4-week microdosing regimen.
  • Participants were instructed to incorporate placebo controls into their routine without clinical supervision.
  • Psychological outcomes were measured from baseline to the end of the dosing period.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements in psychological outcomes were observed from baseline in both microdose and placebo groups.
  • No significant differences in overall psychological outcomes were found between the microdose and placebo groups.
  • Small, significant differences in acute and post-acute scales were noted, potentially due to participants breaking the blind.

Conclusions:

  • The observed psychological benefits of microdosing psychedelics appear to be attributable to the placebo effect.
  • This study, the largest placebo-controlled trial on psychedelics to date, highlights the importance of rigorous controls in psychedelic research.
  • Further research should focus on understanding the mechanisms of the placebo effect in psychedelic experiences.
