Pulse Oximetry01:24

Pulse Oximetry

1.0K
Pulse oximetry, or SpO2, is a non-invasive method for continuously monitoring arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2). This procedure involves attaching a probe or sensor to the patient's fingertip, forehead, earlobe, or nose bridge. The sensor works by detecting changes in oxygen saturation levels through light signals generated by the oximeter and reflected by the pulsing blood under the probe.
Purpose
Average SpO2 values are greater than 95%. If the readings fall below 90%, it indicates that...

Guidelines For Measuring Vital Signs01:19

Guidelines For Measuring Vital Signs

2.4K
Following these guidelines can help nurses accurately measure vital signs, assess changes in patient conditions, and provide timely treatment when necessary. Adhering closely to the guidelines ensures the accuracy and reliability of the results.
Before taking a patient's vital signs, a nurse would consider and assess the patient's comfort level and ensure appropriate equipment is available.

Special considerations while measuring oxygen saturation01:19

Special considerations while measuring oxygen saturation

779
Assessing respiratory rate concurrently with pulse measurement is fundamental to patient care, providing valuable insights into the patient's respiratory function. The normal breathing rate for an adult usually falls within a normal range of 12 to 20 breaths per minute. Abnormal respiratory rates can signal underlying health conditions or the need for immediate intervention.
Ensuring accuracy in vital sign recordings while prioritizing patient comfort and minimizing anxiety is...

Summary

A new handheld retinal oximeter accurately measures blood oxygen saturation in the eye. This device shows sensitivity to oxygen changes and provides results comparable to the established Oxymap T1, expanding oximetry accessibility.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical Devices
  • Physiology

Background:

  • Retinal oximetry is a non-invasive method to measure oxygen saturation in retinal vessels.
  • A mobile handheld prototype oximeter aims to broaden the accessibility of this technique.
  • Current limitations necessitate validation of new devices against established standards.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the sensitivity of a novel handheld retinal oximeter.
  • To compare its performance against the Oxymap T1 under normoxic and hyperoxic conditions.
  • To assess the device's utility for diverse patient populations.

Main Methods:

  • Thirteen healthy young subjects underwent retinal oximetry using both the prototype and Oxymap T1.
  • Measurements were taken during normoxia and isocapnic hyperoxia induced by dynamic end-tidal forcing.
  • Blood gas analysis verified the hyperoxic state; oxygen saturation and vessel width were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • The handheld oximeter detected significant increases in oxygen saturation in both arterioles and venules during hyperoxia (p < 0.001).
  • Mean arteriolar saturation increased from 91.3% to 94.6% and venular from 56.3% to 82.2%.
  • Results closely aligned with the Oxymap T1, indicating comparable performance.

Conclusions:

  • The handheld retinal oximeter demonstrates sensitivity to changes in inhaled oxygen.
  • It provides reliable measurements comparable to the 'gold standard' Oxymap T1.
  • This validates the prototype's potential for wider clinical application.
