Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

5.8K
Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans.
RSV is a retrovirus that contains two copies of a plus-strand  RNA genome. Its genome consists of four main open...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Radiology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS) is a rare neoplasm originating from dendritic cells within lymphoid tissues.
  • The imaging characteristics of IDCS are not well-defined, posing diagnostic challenges.

Observation:

  • A 48-year-old female presented with a growing retroperitoneal mass.
  • CT and MRI revealed a large, irregular, enhancing soft tissue mass with necrosis and cystic changes.
  • Pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of IDCS.

Findings:

  • The patient underwent surgical resection with positive margins, followed by adjuvant radiotherapy.
  • Post-treatment imaging showed multiple lung metastases, indicating aggressive disease.
  • Combination chemotherapy with doxorubicin and ifosfamide was initiated.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the importance of comprehensive imaging in evaluating IDCS.
  • Radiological assessment is crucial for determining tumor extent, local invasion, and distant metastasis.
  • Early detection and accurate staging through imaging aid in treatment planning for this rare sarcoma.
