Area of Science:

  • Spinal surgery
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Neurosurgery

Background:

  • Posterior cervical facet fusion is a technique for spinal fusion.
  • It is used when posterior elements are deficient due to laminectomy or trauma.
  • The original technique uses autologous bone struts secured with wires.

Observation:

  • The original technique has limitations for long fusion areas.
  • Obtaining adequate length and shape of bone grafts can be difficult.
  • This can impede bridging the desired fusion area.

Findings:

  • A modified technique substitutes thin Harrington compression rods for bone struts.
  • Cancellous and corticocancellous bone graft is used with the rods.
  • This approach overcomes limitations of the original technique for long fusions.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This technique offers a viable solution for extensive posterior cervical fusion.
  • It may improve fusion rates and reduce complications in challenging cases.
  • This modification enhances the versatility of posterior cervical fusion procedures.
