Ectopic pregnancy and prior induced abortion.

Summary

A history of induced abortion does not significantly increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy. This large case-control study found no elevated risk for women with one or more prior induced abortions.

Background:

Ectopic pregnancy poses significant health risks to women.
Previous studies have yielded conflicting results regarding the association between induced abortion and ectopic pregnancy risk.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the relationship between a history of induced abortion and the risk of subsequent ectopic pregnancy.

Main Methods:

A case-control study was conducted within the Women's Health Study.
Data were collected from 462 women with ectopic pregnancy and 2326 control women.
Reproductive histories, including induced abortions, were assessed via interviews.

Main Results:

The relative risk of ectopic pregnancy was 1.0 for women with one prior induced abortion (95% CI: 0.5-1.8).
