Summary

Permanent tracheostomy in horses provides a functional airway with few complications. This surgical procedure for ponies and horses resulted in a low rate of respiratory issues and deaths.

Background:

  • Permanent tracheostomy is a surgical procedure to create an airway.
  • This study evaluates the long-term outcomes of permanent tracheostomies in equines.

Observation:

  • 46 ponies and 1 Quarter Horse underwent permanent tracheostomy between 1981 and 1986.
  • Tracheostomies were assessed for orifice size, obstruction, epidermal healing, and airflow.
  • Exercise-induced dyspnea was evaluated in 27 ponies.

Findings:

  • All examined tracheostomies (19 ponies, 1 horse) showed airflow with nasal occlusion.
  • No significant tracheal obstruction or epidermal regrowth issues were noted.
  • Only 5 of 21 deaths in ponies were linked to respiratory complications (tracheal collapse, COPD).
