Summary

Ulcerative colitis patients show significantly lower Peptide YY (PYY) levels in rectal mucosa and plasma compared to healthy individuals. These reduced PYY concentrations correlate with rectal tissue damage and disease severity.

Background:

  • Peptide YY (PYY) is a hormone produced by endocrine cells in the lower gastrointestinal tract.
  • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease affecting the colon.
  • The role of PYY in the pathophysiology of UC requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate Peptide YY (PYY) concentrations in rectal mucosa and plasma of patients with ulcerative colitis (UC).
  • To examine the relationship between PYY levels and histopathological changes in UC.
  • To assess the correlation between PYY concentrations and the extent of UC lesions.

Main Methods:

  • Radioimmunoassay was used to measure PYY concentrations.
  • Measurements were performed on rectal mucosal tissue and fasting plasma samples.

    • Fasting plasma PYY levels were also significantly lower in UC patients (53.3 +/- 7.9 fmol/ml) than in normal subjects (160.7 +/- 19.7 fmol/ml).
    • Decreased PYY levels were associated with crypt destruction and reduced mucosal cells in UC patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Reduced PYY concentrations in rectal mucosa and plasma are linked to ulcerative colitis.
    • The findings suggest a relationship between PYY levels and the severity of UC lesions.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the precise role of PYY in UC pathogenesis.
