Background:

  • Limited research exists on sleep patterns in surgical patient populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate sleep disturbances in patients undergoing elective general surgery.
  • To quantify sleep quality and duration using objective and subjective measures.
  • To compare inpatient sleep in surgical patients to other populations.

Main Methods:

  • 64 patients undergoing elective inpatient general surgery were enrolled.
  • Fitbit trackers monitored total sleep time (TST).
  • Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire (RCSQ) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) assessed sleep quality pre- and post-operatively.

Main Results:

  • The mean RCSQ total sleep score was 49 ± 20.5, with 53.1% scoring below 50 (indicating poor sleep quality).
  • Mean TST was consistently below the CDC's recommended 7 hours per night, with only 10.9% achieving this on the first night.
  • 88.1% of patients were poor sleepers preoperatively and 84.5% postoperatively per PSQI.

Conclusions:

  • Elective general surgery patients experience severe inpatient sleep disturbances.
  • Sleep disturbance in surgical patients is more pronounced than in studied ICU cohorts.
  • Nighttime awakenings are identified as the primary driver of poor sleep quality.
