Summary

High Grit medical students utilize planning, metacognitive skills, mastery learning, cognitive strategies, and self-regulation. An intervention based on these strategies, RESET-P-GOALS, significantly improved Grit scores in low Grit students.

Background:

  • Grit, a combination of passion and perseverance for long-term goals, is crucial for academic success.
  • Identifying learning strategies of high-Grit medical students can inform interventions for those with lower Grit.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify learning strategies of high-Grit medical students.
  • To design and implement an intervention to enhance Grit in low-Grit medical students.

Main Methods:

  • Mixed-methods study with an explanatory sequential design.
  • Phase I: Survey of first-year medical students to assess Grit levels.
  • Phase II: Interviews with high-Grit students to identify learning strategies, followed by intervention design and implementation for low-Grit students.

Main Results:

  • 133 students participated; 23% had high Grit, 7.5% had low Grit.
  • Five key themes emerged: Planning, Metacognitive skills, Mastery learning, Cognitive strategies, and Self-regulation.
  • The "RESET-P-GOALS" intervention significantly improved Grit scores in low-Grit students (p=0.005).

Conclusions:

  • Effective Grit is associated with strong planning, mastery learning, and self-regulation.
  • "RESET-P-GOALS" learning strategies are effective in enhancing Grit among medical students with lower Grit levels.
