Summary

Proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) arthrodesis techniques show similar fusion times and complication rates. Screw fixation may offer a lower nonunion rate compared to wire fusion for PIPJ arthrodesis.

Background:

  • Proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) arthrodesis is a critical salvage procedure for end-stage PIPJ arthropathy.
  • Various surgical techniques exist, but optimal method consensus is lacking, and recent literature summaries are unavailable.

Conclusions:

  • Current PIPJ arthrodesis techniques demonstrate comparable fusion times and overall complication rates.
  • Screw fixation appears to have an advantage in reducing nonunion rates compared to wire fixation.
  • Further research is needed due to data limitations to definitively differentiate technique efficacy.
