Summary

Polymorphisms in class II major histocompatibility (MHC) molecules are linked to autoimmune diseases. Specific amino acid variations in these molecules are associated with increased susceptibility to type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and pemphigus vulgaris.
