Summary

This study found that 9.8% of seven-year-olds experience enuresis (bedwetting). Parental history and low birth weight significantly increase the risk of childhood enuresis.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatrics
  • Genetics
  • Developmental Psychology

Background:

  • Enuresis, or involuntary urination, affects a significant portion of children.
  • Understanding risk factors is crucial for early intervention and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of enuresis in seven-year-old children.
  • To investigate associated somatic and genetic risk factors for enuresis.

Main Methods:

  • A random sample of 3,206 seven-year-old children was surveyed.
  • Data collected included enuresis status, birth weight, and parental enuresis history.

Main Results:

  • Overall enuresis prevalence was 9.8% (nightwetting 6.4%, daywetting 1.8%, mixed 1.6%).
  • Children with postponed school entry (24.8%) and those with disabilities (26.6%) showed higher prevalence.
  • Parental enuresis history (father 7.1x, mother 5.2x risk) and low birth weight were significant risk factors.

Conclusions:

  • Enuresis prevalence varies across different child populations.
  • Genetic factors and birth weight are strongly associated with enuresis.
  • Two etiological groups identified: neurological damage and delayed maturation.
