Area of Science:

  • Behavioral Science
  • Addiction Research
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Nicotine gum is a common smoking cessation aid.
  • Behavioral support can enhance cessation success.
  • The effectiveness of self-help materials with nicotine gum requires evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the added benefit of behavioral self-help materials for smoking cessation when used with nicotine gum.
  • To compare the effectiveness of self-help booklets versus informational pamphlets.

Main Methods:

  • 187 women and 117 men were randomized to receive either self-help booklets or a factual pamphlet.
  • All participants received prescriptions for nicotine gum (Nicorette).
  • Abstinence rates were monitored at 6-month follow-up.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in abstinence rates was observed between the self-help booklet group and the pamphlet group.
  • Overall smoking abstinence rates were encouraging.
  • Nicotine gum users were significantly more likely to maintain abstinence at 6 months compared to non-users.

Conclusions:

  • Behavioral self-help materials, as designed, did not provide incremental effectiveness over factual information when used with nicotine gum.
  • Nicotine gum use is strongly associated with sustained smoking abstinence.
  • Future self-help materials may benefit from simplified, visually engaging content.
