Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effects of treadmill, elliptical, and rowing exercise on fat oxidation rates in healthy individuals.
  • To determine the exercise intensity at which maximal fat oxidation occurs across different modalities.

Main Methods:

  • Nine healthy males underwent maximal oxygen consumption (V̇O2peak) tests on a treadmill, elliptical, and rowing ergometer.
  • Indirect calorimetry was used to measure V̇O2peak, maximal fat oxidation (MFO), and the intensity of MFO (Fatmax).
  • Blood lactate concentrations were analyzed post-exercise.

Main Results:

  • Maximal oxygen consumption (V̇O2peak) was similar across all three exercise modalities.
  • Maximal fat oxidation (MFO) rates were significantly higher on the treadmill (0.61 g·min-1) compared to the elliptical (0.41 g·min-1) and rower (0.40 g·min-1).
  • The intensity at which maximal fat oxidation occurred (Fatmax) was also significantly higher on the treadmill (56.0 %V̇O2peak) versus the elliptical (36.8 %V̇O2peak) and rower (31.6 %V̇O2peak).
  • Post-exercise blood lactate levels were lower following treadmill exercise.

Conclusions:

  • Treadmill exercise elicits greater maximal fat oxidation rates and occurs at a higher relative intensity compared to elliptical and rowing exercises.
  • Treadmill exercise may be a more effective modality for enhancing fat oxidation and improving cardio-metabolic health.
  • These findings highlight the importance of exercise modality selection for optimizing metabolic benefits.
