Delayed symptoms like fatigue and dyspnea are common after COVID-19 recovery. While many patients become symptom-free, follow-up care and rehabilitation may be beneficial for those experiencing persistent issues.
Area of Science:
- Infectious Diseases
- Pulmonology
- Public Health
Background:
- COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) is a novel infectious disease with evolving understanding of its long-term effects.
- Limited data exists on the frequency and nature of delayed symptoms following acute COVID-19 infection.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the prevalence of delayed symptoms in patients previously hospitalized with COVID-19.
- To identify the most common persistent symptoms six weeks after hospital discharge.
Main Methods:
- A follow-up cross-sectional study involving 200 patients discharged from a referral hospital in Tehran, Iran.
- Patients were assessed for delayed symptoms six weeks post-discharge, with data collected between February and April 2020.
Main Results:
- Forty-two percent of patients were symptom-free six weeks after discharge; none required hospital readmission.
- The most frequent delayed symptoms were fatigue (19.5%), dyspnea (18.5%), and weakness (18%).
- Other reported delayed symptoms included anxiety and activity intolerance.
Conclusions:
- Fatigue, dyspnea, weakness, anxiety, and activity intolerance are common delayed symptoms post-COVID-19.
- While many patients recover fully, a significant portion experiences mild to moderate persistent symptoms.
- The study highlights the need for continued monitoring and potential rehabilitation programs for COVID-19 survivors.
