Summary

A bronchogenic cyst caused a temporary, one-sided ventilation-perfusion defect in a patient presenting with chest pain and shortness of breath. Surgical removal resolved the lung scan abnormalities, marking a unique case report.

Background:

  • A 37-year-old woman presented with pleuritic chest pain and dyspnea.
  • Initial chest roentgenogram revealed normal findings, necessitating further investigation.

Observation:

  • Lung scan demonstrated significantly reduced perfusion in the right lung.
  • A matched ventilatory defect was also observed, indicating impaired gas exchange.

Findings:

  • Further diagnostic evaluation identified a bronchogenic cyst as the underlying cause.
  • Following surgical resection of the cyst, the lung scan returned to normal.

Implications:

  • This case represents the first reported instance of a bronchogenic cyst inducing a reversible, unilateral ventilation-perfusion defect.
