Background:

  • Aripiprazole use is preliminarily linked to problem gambling (PBG).
  • Limited data exist on PBG in first-episode psychosis (FEP) patients using aripiprazole, despite its common use in this vulnerable population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between aripiprazole and PBG in FEP patients.
  • To determine if FEP patients on aripiprazole have a higher risk of developing PBG.

Main Methods:

  • A nested case-control study was conducted on 219 FEP patients.
  • Fourteen PBG cases were identified and matched with 56 controls based on gender and index date.

Main Results:

  • Aripiprazole use was associated with a significantly increased risk of PBG (OR 15.2, univariable; OR 8.6, adjusted).
  • FEP patients with any gambling history (recreational or problematic) were more likely to develop PBG.

Conclusions:

  • FEP patients with a gambling history may be at higher risk for PBG when treated with aripiprazole.
  • Systematic PBG screening is vital for individuals with psychotic disorders to prevent hindered recovery.
  • Further prospective studies are needed to confirm the causal association between aripiprazole and PBG.
