Mental health support for pharmacy students is often not found within pharmacy schools. Most resources, like on-site counselors, are available through the broader university, and information is frequently difficult to locate online.
Area of Science:
- Health Professions Education
- Mental Health Services Research
- Student Affairs
Background:
- Mental health disorders are increasingly prevalent among pharmacy students.
- Identifying accessible mental health resources is crucial for this population.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the availability and accessibility of mental health resources for pharmacy students.
- To determine if pharmacy schools offer dedicated mental health support services.
Main Methods:
- A two-arm study was conducted: a survey of student affairs representatives from 11 pharmacy schools and a website scan of all US pharmacy schools (n=150).
- Data collected included resource availability, location, and future plans, alongside the ease of finding information online.
- Descriptive statistics were performed using Microsoft Excel.
Main Results:
- For surveyed schools (n=9), 89% reported an on-site counselor, but these were typically university-wide, not pharmacy-specific.
- Website scans revealed that 83% of on-site counselors were also located within the general university, not the pharmacy school.
- Information on mental health resources was absent from 77% of pharmacy school websites, with 45% of information being "somewhat" or "extremely difficult" to find.
Conclusions:
- The most common mental health services, such as on-site counselors, are generally integrated into broader university services rather than being specific to pharmacy schools.
- There is a significant gap in the online accessibility and discoverability of mental health resources for pharmacy students.
