¹H NMR: Long-Range Coupling

2.2K
The coupling interactions of nuclei across four or more bonds are usually weak, with J values less than 1 Hz. While these are usually not observed in spectra, the presence of multiple bonds along the coupling pathway can result in observable long-range coupling.
In alkenes, spin information is communicated via σ–π overlap, as seen in allylic (four-bond) and homoallylic (five-bond) couplings. These coupling interactions are stronger when the σ bond is parallel to the alkene...

    Summary

We developed a new model for overlapping nanopillars, revealing a third oscillator mode that enables direct wave coupling. This advances understanding of light control in nanophotonic devices.

    Area of Science:

    • Nanophotonics and Optics
    • Computational Physics

    Background:

    • Controlling light with nanophotonic devices relies on understanding subwavelength structure interactions.
    • Existing multiple scattering theories analyze separated elements, not overlapping ones.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop a theoretical approach for studying wave coupling in overlapping nanophotonic particles.
    • To analyze the simplest system: a dimer of nanopillars.

    Main Methods:

    • Developed a novel theoretical approach based on a three-oscillator model.
    • Validated the model against numerical simulations.

    Main Results:

    • The model accurately describes the dimer system, including two modes from isolated particle responses.

  • Identified a third, non-resonant oscillator mode responsible for direct coupling through the overlapping region.
  • Conclusions:

    • The three-oscillator model provides reliable agreement with simulations for overlapping nanopillars.
    • Offers physical insight into the collective response of clustered, overlapped subwavelength particles.
