Summary

A patient with vitamin E deficiency and malnutrition developed a complete bowel obstruction. This case highlights the severe gastrointestinal complications associated with nutritional deficiencies.

  • A 57-year-old male presented with vomiting and abdominal tenderness.
  • Clinical suspicion for ileus and small bowel obstruction was noted.
  • Exploratory laparotomy revealed a non-peristaltic, brown-colored bowel.

Findings:

  • The intraoperative finding of a completely immobile, discolored bowel suggests a severe form of intestinal dysfunction.
  • This presentation is consistent with a catastrophic outcome of prolonged malnutrition and vitamin E deficiency.
