The Thoracic Cage: Sternum

The thoracic or rib cage forms the body's thorax (chest) portion. Its primary function in the body is to protect vital organs in the thoracic cavity, such as the heart and the lungs. It consists of 12 pairs of ribs with their costal cartilages and the sternum. The ribs are anchored posteriorly to the 12 thoracic vertebrae (T1-T12).

Summary

Self-limiting sternal tumour of childhood (SELSTOC) is an aseptic inflammation presenting as a sternal swelling in young children. A wait-and-see approach is recommended initially for this benign condition.

Background:

Sternal swelling in infants can be concerning for various pathologies.
Early diagnosis is crucial for appropriate management and parental reassurance.

Observation:

A one-year-old boy presented with a parasternal tumor exhibiting a blue hue.
Physical examination revealed a distinct sternal swelling.

Findings:

Ultrasound imaging facilitated the diagnosis of self-limiting sternal tumour of childhood (SELSTOC).
SELSTOC is characterized as an aseptic inflammation specific to young children.

Implications:

This diagnosis suggests a benign and self-resolving condition, reducing the need for invasive procedures.
