We sequenced the genome of Pantoea ananatis OC5a, an onion-pathogenic strain from New York. This high-quality, complete genome provides insights into onion center rot disease.
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Plant Pathology
- Genomics
Background:
- Pantoea ananatis is a bacterial pathogen causing significant crop losses globally.
- Onion center rot, caused by P. ananatis, is a major disease affecting onion production.
- Previous genomic data for onion-pathogenic P. ananatis strains from New York were limited.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report the complete, high-quality genome sequence and annotation of Pantoea ananatis OC5a.
- To provide a genomic resource for understanding the pathogenicity of P. ananatis in onions.
- To establish a reference genome for P. ananatis strains from New York.
Main Methods:
- Isolation of Pantoea ananatis OC5a from an infected onion bulb.
- Whole-genome sequencing using long PacBio and high-fidelity Illumina reads.
- Bioinformatic analysis for genome assembly, annotation, and quality assessment.
Main Results:
- The genome of P. ananatis OC5a was successfully assembled into a closed, complete, and high-quality sequence.
- Annotation of the genome provided insights into genes related to pathogenicity and metabolism.
- This represents the first complete genome sequence of an onion-pathogenic P. ananatis strain from New York.
Conclusions:
- The high-quality genome sequence of P. ananatis OC5a is a valuable resource for plant pathology research.
- Genomic information can aid in developing strategies to manage onion center rot.
- Further studies can utilize this genome to investigate virulence factors and host-pathogen interactions.
