Laparoscopic cholecystectomy significantly alters hematological parameters and liver enzymes. Key changes include decreases in hemoglobin and increases in leukocytes post-surgery.
Area of Science:
- Surgical Oncology
- Gastroenterology
- Hematology
Background:
- Laparoscopic surgeries are known to cause alterations in hematological parameters.
- Parameters like neutrophils, leukocytes, and platelet indices may change during these procedures.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the impact of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) on hematological parameters and liver enzymes.
- To assess specific changes in blood counts and liver function tests before and after LC.
Main Methods:
- A prospective observational study was conducted on patients undergoing LC for symptomatic cholelithiasis.
- Hematological parameters and liver function tests were recorded preoperatively and postoperatively.
- A paired sample t-test was used to analyze the differences in mean values.
Main Results:
- Hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelets, and alkaline phosphatase showed a significant decrease postoperatively.
- Mean corpuscular volume, mean platelet volume, leukocytes, and alanine transaminase levels increased significantly after surgery.
- The observed changes in hemoglobin, MCV, Hct, leukocytes, MPV, and ALT were statistically significant (p<0.05).
Conclusions:
- Laparoscopic cholecystectomy leads to significant alterations in both hematological parameters and liver enzymes.
- These findings highlight the physiological response to the surgical procedure.
