Summary

Multiple sclerosis (MS) patients show increased brachial plexus nerve root elasticity and decreased diameter, suggesting peripheral nervous system involvement. Shear wave elastography can detect these changes in MS.

Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neuroinflammatory disease affecting the peripheral nerves.
  • Shear wave elastography (SWE) shows promise for detecting peripheral nerve involvement in MS.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare brachial plexus (BP) nerve root thickening and elasticity in MS patients versus controls.
  • To assess the utility of sonoelastography for diagnosing MS-related peripheral nerve changes.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-two MS patients and 32 controls were studied.
  • Mean diameters and elasticity (kPa) of C5, C6, and C7 nerve roots were measured using sonoelastography.
  • Correlations with age, height, and weight were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • C5 and C6 nerve roots in MS patients exhibited increased elasticity and decreased diameter compared to controls (P<0.05).
  • No significant differences in C7 nerve root elasticity or diameter were observed between groups (P>0.05).

Conclusions:

  • MS patients demonstrate elevated brachial plexus nerve root elasticity and reduced diameter, consistent with peripheral nervous system demyelination.
  • Sonoelastography is a valuable tool for identifying peripheral nerve alterations in MS.
