Hand hygiene01:23

Hand hygiene

5.0K
Asepsis is the practice of preventing or breaking the chain of infection. The nurse employs aseptic techniques to prevent the spread of microorganisms and reduce the risk of diseases. Hand hygiene is the cornerstone of aseptic techniques and is classified into medical and surgical asepsis. Medical asepsis includes hand hygiene and the use of gloves. Surgical asepsis, or the sterile technique, refers to practices that render and keep objects and areas free of microorganisms.

Suctioning the Oropharyngeal Airway01:25

Suctioning the Oropharyngeal Airway

524
In preparing for oropharyngeal airway suctioning, a nurse must gather all necessary equipment, including a suction unit with tubing, a prepackaged suction kit, sterile gloves, water or saline for irrigation, a water-soluble lubricant, and additional personal protective equipment (such as a gown, mask, and goggles) to control infections.
After assembling the equipment, the nurse should practice hand hygiene and don appropriate PPE according to infection control guidelines to avoid the...

Oxygen Delivering System III: Tracheostomy and T-piece

3.4K
Oxygen delivery is critical in clinical care, especially for patients with respiratory disorders or those undergoing surgical procedures. Various systems, such as tracheostomy and the T-piece, deliver oxygen to the lungs, ensuring adequate arterial oxygenation.
Tracheostomy
A tracheostomy is a surgically created opening (stoma) in the anterior part of the trachea. It is used to establish a patient airway, bypass an upper airway obstruction, simplify the removal of secretions, permit long-term...

Tracheostomy Suctioning II: Procedure

909
Tracheostomy suctioning is a vital nursing procedure that involves removing secretions from the tracheostomy tube to maintain airway patency and prevent respiratory complications. Nurses need to understand the proper technique for tracheostomy suctioning to ensure patient safety and comfort. In this guide, we will outline the step-by-step process for performing tracheostomy suctioning, including preparing the sterile field, donning personal protective equipment (PPE), lubricating and connecting...

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Surgical Technology

    Background:

    • Phacoemulsification is a common cataract surgery technique.
    • Intraocular pressure (IOP) fluctuations and post-occlusion surge are potential complications.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the performance of Active Sentry and Centurion Ozil phacoemulsification handpieces.
    • To evaluate the impact on intraocular pressure, energy consumption, and fluid usage.

    Main Methods:

    • A comparative study involving 200 eyes (100 with Active Sentry, 100 with Centurion Ozil).
    • Evaluation of intraoperative IOP, cumulative dissipated energy (CDE), ultrasound time, and balanced salt solution (BSS) consumption.
    • All surgeries performed by a single surgeon.

    Main Results:

    • Active Sentry significantly reduced intraoperative IOP (46 mmHg) compared to Centurion Ozil (65 mmHg).
    • Mean CDE and ultrasound time were significantly lower with Active Sentry.
    • No significant difference in BSS consumption was observed.

    Conclusions:

    • Active Sentry handpiece effectively lowers IOP and eliminates post-occlusion surge during phacoemulsification.
    • This leads to improved patient comfort and a more surgeon-friendly procedure, especially in complex cases.
