Summary

This case study shows how a mother successfully continued exclusive breastfeeding despite infant growth concerns. Evidence-based interventions and support helped maintain breastfeeding and improve infant weight gain.

Background:

Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for infant health.
Infant growth faltering can lead to recommendations for formula supplementation.

Observation:

A mother exclusively breastfed her infant, who subsequently showed slowed growth between 2 and 4 months.
The infant "fell off the growth curve" at the 4-month visit, prompting advice to formula feed.

Findings:

The mother sought support to continue breastfeeding and avoided formula supplementation.
An individualized feeding plan developed with an advanced practice nurse facilitated continued breastfeeding.
The infant achieved appropriate weight gain under the revised feeding plan.

Implications:

Early breastfeeding assessment and support are crucial during pediatric wellness visits.
Evidence-based breastfeeding interventions can help overcome challenges and maintain lactation.
Individualized care plans are effective in supporting breastfeeding mothers facing infant growth concerns.
