Background:

  • Inflammation is increasingly recognized for its role in various cancers, including thyroid carcinoma.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic value of preoperative serum inflammatory factors in thyroid tumors.
  • To explore the potential of these markers in differentiating thyroid cancer subtypes.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 487 thyroid tumor patients and compared inflammatory markers (NE, WBC, MO, LY, PLT, MLR, NLR, PLR, CRP, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-27, TNF-α) with controls.
  • Utilized receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and multivariable logistic regression to assess diagnostic values.

Main Results:

  • Elevated serum platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), C-reactive protein (CRP), and interleukin-27 (IL-27) were observed in thyroid adenoma and differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) patients.
  • Area under the curve (AUC) for CRP and IL-27 were significant for DTC diagnosis. IL-27 AUC distinguished between follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC).
  • Multivariable analysis indicated IL-27 and CRP are associated with DTC, while NLR+PLR aids in differentiating PTC from controls.

Conclusions:

  • Inflammation is significant in the progression of thyroid adenoma and DTC.
  • Preoperative IL-27 and CRP levels are valuable for the differential diagnosis of DTC.
  • IL-27 aids in distinguishing FTC from PTC, and NLR+PLR is important for PTC differential diagnosis.
