Background:

Increasing demand for surgical services and physician shortages necessitate longer careers for older surgeons in the U.S.
Currently, no mandatory retirement age exists for surgeons in the United States, regardless of age.

Purpose of the Study:

To emphasize the significance of aging surgeons in medicine.
To offer an evidence-based review of age-related cognitive and physical changes affecting surgeons in later career stages.

Main Methods:

A comprehensive PubMed/MEDLINE search was conducted using the term "aging surgeon."
Articles were selected based on relevance to surgeon age or retirement.
Supporting data was gathered from cited reports to validate findings.

Main Results:

Aging surgeons offer extensive experience but are susceptible to age-related declines in cognition, vision, and motor skills.
While surgeons can operate effectively into their senior years, potential performance decline exists.
Effective strategies for preparing older surgeons for retirement have been identified.

Conclusions:

The extensive experience of aging surgeons is a valuable asset that must be balanced against age-related cognitive and physical declines.
Proactive management and preparation are essential for maintaining surgical quality and safety as surgeons age.
