Gallbladder01:17

Gallbladder

1.3K
The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ that plays a crucial role in our digestive system. Measuring about 10 cm in length, it is comparable in size to a kiwi fruit and is located in a hollow area on the lower surface of the liver. The gallbladder's primary function is to store and concentrate bile, a fluid produced by the liver that aids in digestion.
The gallbladder's anatomy consists of three regions: the fundus, body, and neck. Extending from the neck, the cystic duct joins...

Diseases of the Liver and Gallbladder

1.6K
Liver and gallbladder diseases are a significant health concern, with prominent conditions including cirrhosis, hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and gallstones. Jaundice is a common manifestation of liver and biliary disease.
Cirrhosis is characterized by the scarring of hepatic lobules in the liver, which are replaced by fibrous tissue, affecting the liver's normal functioning. NAFLD, on the other hand, is caused by an excessive build-up of fat in the liver, not...

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Pathology
  • Surgical Case Reports

Background:

  • Gallbladder heterotopic ossification is an exceedingly rare condition.
  • Chronic inflammation secondary to gallstones is suspected as the cause.

Observation:

  • A 35-year-old female presented with right upper quadrant pain, nausea, and a history of gallstones.
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy revealed gallbladder microlithiasis and heterotopic ossification within the mucosa.
  • Histopathology confirmed chronic inflammation and fibromuscular hyperplasia, with no evidence of dysplasia or malignancy.

Findings:

  • This case represents the first reported instance of gallbladder heterotopic ossification in Australia.
  • The ossification was incidentally discovered during routine histopathological examination post-cholecystectomy.
  • Diagnosis prior to surgery is currently limited by technical capabilities.

Implications:

  • This finding underscores the potential for unusual complications arising from chronic gallbladder inflammation and gallstones.
  • While rare, the association of heterotopic ossification with adenocarcinoma warrants consideration for patient follow-up.
  • Further research is needed to understand the pathogenesis and diagnostic criteria for this rare condition.
