Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.

Background:

Shared decision-making (SDM) is crucial in managing autism treatment options.
Online, interactive case-based training offers a scalable method for medical education.
Developmental-behavioral pediatrics fellows require specialized training in SDM for autism care.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare the effectiveness of two distinct online training modules on SDM in autism care.
To assess the impact of direct SDM teaching versus evidence-based practice (EBP) training on fellows' SDM skills.
To evaluate changes in attitudes toward concordance in medication-prescribing for autism.

Main Methods:

A quasi-randomized controlled trial (quasi-RCT) involving 97 fellows across the United States.
Two online, interactive case-based training modules: one focused on SDM, the other on EBP for autism medication.
Outcomes measured included self-reported SDM and attitudes toward medication-prescribing concordance, controlling for covariates.

Main Results:

Both training groups demonstrated significant improvements in SDM after the intervention.
No significant increase in medication-prescribing concordance was observed in either group.
Training effectiveness was consistent across different trainee levels and prior experience.

Conclusions:

Online case-based training, whether directly on SDM or indirectly on EBP, effectively enhances SDM knowledge in autism care.
Accessible and consistent online SDM training can be implemented nationwide for all relevant trainees.
Further research may explore specific components of EBP training that influence SDM.
