Summary

COVID-19 significantly impacted nurses, with the median age of deceased nurses being 56. Registered nurses comprised the largest group of fatalities, but mental health nurses were predominant within their departments.

Background:

Nurses are critical in pandemic response but face high COVID-19 exposure risks.
Understanding characteristics of nurses who died from COVID-19 is crucial for targeted support.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the underlying characteristics of nurses who died due to COVID-19.
To identify demographic and departmental trends among deceased nurses.

Main Methods:

A grey literature search was conducted on September 1, 2020.
Data was collected from various online sources including Medscape, Google, PubMed, and government/non-government websites.
Keywords related to 'nurse' and 'COVID-19' were used to identify relevant studies.

Main Results:

Details on age, gender, and nursing department were available for 766, 945, and 153 nurses, respectively, out of 1518 reported deaths.
The median age of deceased nurses was 56 years, with most deaths (32%) in the 46-65 age range.
Registered nurses accounted for the highest number of deaths (71%), while mental health nurses represented 28% of deaths within their specific departments. The USA, South Africa, Mexico, and Russia reported the most nurse deaths.

Conclusions:

Further research is needed to understand the high mortality among mental health nurses.
Developing supportive health policies can enhance nurse motivation and potentially mitigate future risks.
