Summary

Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) achieved high success rates for primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRD) in eyes eligible for pneumatic retinopexy (PnR). This real-world study found robust single surgery anatomical success and good visual outcomes.

Background:

  • Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is a serious condition requiring timely intervention.
  • Pneumatic retinopexy (PnR) is a less invasive option for select RRDs.
  • Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is a common surgical approach for RRD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the real-world effectiveness of PPV for primary RRDs.
  • To assess outcomes in eyes anatomically suitable for PnR but treated with PPV.
  • To determine single surgery anatomical success (SSAS) and final anatomical success (FAS) rates.

  • Retrospective case series of 720 eyes with primary RRDs (2010-2018).
