Background:

  • Tension-type headache (TTH) is a prevalent neurological condition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the characteristics and principles of acupoints used in treating TTH.
  • To identify frequently utilized acupoints and meridians for TTH management.
  • To analyze the distribution and application patterns of acupoints in TTH therapy.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was conducted across four databases up to September 1, 2020.
  • Data on TTH treatments using acupuncture and moxibustion were extracted, including acupoint details.
  • A self-established Data Excavation Platform of Acupoint Specificity was used for analysis.

Main Results:

  • 128 papers with 137 prescriptions involving 89 meridian and 7 extraordinary acupoints were analyzed.
  • Fengchi (GB20), Baihui (GV20), Taiyang (EX-HN5), Hegu (LI4), and Taichong (LR3) were the most frequently applied acupoints.
  • Acupoints on Yang meridians (66.1%), especially the Gallbladder Meridian, were favored. Most acupoints were located on the head, face, neck (59.9%), and limbs (31.7%).

Conclusions:

  • The combination of Fengchi (GB20), Baihui (GV20), Taiyang (EX-HN5), Hegu (LI4), and Taichong (LR3) appears to be a reasonable clinical prescription for TTH.
  • Further clinical studies are warranted to validate the efficacy of these acupoint combinations.
  • The findings provide insights into acupoint selection principles for TTH management.
