Summary

Intrathyroidal ectopic thymus (IET) can mimic thyroid nodules. This study found that sonoelastography, alongside ultrasound, can help differentiate IET from papillary thyroid cancer in children, potentially avoiding unnecessary biopsies.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the sonoelastographic characteristics of intrathyroidal ectopic thymus in a pediatric population.
  • To assess the utility of strain elastography in differentiating IET from other thyroid lesions.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study included 12 children examined with ultrasound and strain elastography.
  • Evaluated demographic data and ultrasonographic features, including location, shape, echogenicity, vascularity, and elastography values.
