Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of NPIs implemented for COVID-19 on hospitalizations for pneumonia, influenza, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and asthma.
  • To compare respiratory hospitalization rates before and during the NPI intervention period.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective, ecological study design was employed.
  • Weekly hospitalization incidence data for four respiratory conditions were analyzed.
  • Data were compared between a pre-intervention period (January 2016–January 2020) and an intervention period (February–July 2020).

Conclusions:

  • The implementation of NPIs against COVID-19 was associated with a significant reduction in hospitalizations for major respiratory conditions.
  • These findings highlight the broad public health impact of NPIs beyond their primary target, COVID-19.
  • Further research should explore the mechanisms behind these observed reductions.
