Summary

Applying a cold compress to the abdomen during intrauterine device (IUD) insertion did not reduce procedural pain. This simple, inexpensive intervention showed no significant difference in pain scores for IUD placement.

Background:

  • Pain during intrauterine device (IUD) insertion is a significant barrier to contraceptive method uptake.
  • Existing interventions to alleviate IUD insertion pain have not demonstrated clear efficacy.
  • Long-acting reversible contraceptives, such as IUDs, are highly effective but require pain management strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of an abdominal cold compress in reducing pain during IUD insertion.
  • To investigate a simple, non-invasive method for mitigating procedural discomfort associated with IUD placement.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective randomized controlled trial involving 142 women undergoing IUD insertion.
  • Participants were randomized to receive either standard care (control group) or an abdominal cold compress before the procedure (study group).
  • Pain levels were assessed using pre- and post-procedure pain scales, with statistical analysis via t-tests and chi-square tests.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant difference in pre- and post-insertion pain scores was observed between the cold compress group and the control group.
  • Mean pain ratings for insertional pain were 4.3 for the cold compress group and 4.6 for the control group (p=0.805).
  • The intervention did not reduce the overall pain experience during IUD insertion.

Conclusions:

  • Abdominal cold compress application is not an effective method for reducing pain during IUD insertion.
  • Despite being a safe and inexpensive option, cold compresses do not offer a significant benefit for managing IUD insertion pain.
  • Further research into effective pain management strategies for IUD procedures is warranted.
