Changes in the National Cancer Institute's R01 workforce: growth, aging, retention, and policy implications.

    Summary

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) R01 Principal Investigator (PI) workforce aged and expanded, with fewer funded early-career cancer researchers. This decline is linked to longer times to award and lower retention rates for younger scientists.

    Area of Science:

    • Biomedical research workforce analysis
    • Cancer research funding trends
    • National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 awards

    Background:

    • Scientific advancement relies on a vibrant biomedical research workforce.
    • Analysis of National Cancer Institute (NCI) R01 awards from fiscal years 1990-2016.
    • Focus on the Principal Investigator (PI) workforce dynamics.

    Observation:

    • The NCI R01 PI workforce expanded 1.4-fold and aged significantly between 1990 and 2016.
    • The number of PIs in the three oldest age groups increased dramatically.
    • Conversely, the number of funded younger PIs showed a decline.

    Findings:

    • Increased numbers of funded older PIs were due to more applications submitted by them, not higher funding rates.
    • The decline in funded younger PIs resulted from increased time from PhD to first R01 award.

  • Fewer early-career PIs were retained beyond their initial R01 award.
  • Implications:

    • The NCI is analyzing these trends to develop strategies for supporting early-career researchers.
    • Policies are being informed to attract, support, and retain meritorious junior scientists.
    • Addressing these workforce challenges is crucial for future cancer research progress.
