Observation:

  • A case study of a 28-year-old female with idiopathic VPI is presented.
  • The patient exhibited rhinolalia and regurgitation of liquids into the nasal cavity.
  • Diagnostic imaging, including MRI of the brain and cervical spine, revealed no abnormalities.

Findings:

  • Infectious serologies were negative, ruling out infectious etiologies.
  • The clinical presentation and negative diagnostic workup are consistent with idiopathic VPI in an adult.
  • This case expands the known demographic for idiopathic VPI.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering idiopathic VPI in adult patients with persistent rhinolalia and nasal regurgitation.
  • Suggests that idiopathic VPI may be underdiagnosed in adults.
  • Further research may be warranted to understand the pathophysiology and prevalence of adult-onset idiopathic VPI.
