Area of Science:

  • Reproductive biology
  • Animal science
  • Biotechnology

Background:

  • Spermatogonial stem cell transplantation (SSCT) enables germline transmission between males, restoring fertility.
  • SSCT holds significant potential as a next-generation breeding technology in livestock production.
  • Current SSCT methods in large animals face inefficiencies and require further technical refinement.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the current state of knowledge regarding SSCT in large animals.
  • To identify key challenges and future research directions in the field.
  • To summarize major studies demonstrating successful SSCT in livestock.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on SSCT in large animals.
  • Analysis of studies focusing on donor SSC preparation.
  • Examination of recipient male treatment protocols and SSC delivery techniques.

Main Results:

  • Summarized key studies with evidence of donor SSC-derived spermatogenesis in livestock.
  • Identified critical steps including SSC preparation, recipient treatment, and injection.
  • Highlighted the need for improved methods for SSC homing and detection.

Conclusions:

  • SSCT is a promising tool for livestock breeding, but efficiency needs improvement.
  • Further investigation into technical aspects of SSCT is crucial for successful application.
  • The review provides a foundation for future research and development in large animal SSCT.
