Teratogenicity01:07

Teratogenicity

3.6K
The ability of a drug to produce structural deformations and functional abnormalities in the developing embryo or the fetus is called teratogenicity, and the drug producing this effect is known as a teratogen. Teratogenic effects include stillbirth, miscarriage, intrauterine growth restriction, and neurocognitive delay. A teratogen may affect the embryo at different stages of development, which is important in determining the type and extent of the damage. During blastocyst formation, the early...

Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

5.7K
Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans.
RSV is a retrovirus that contains two copies of a plus-strand  RNA genome. Its genome consists of four main open...

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Public Health

Background:

  • COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) poses a public health challenge.
  • Limited data exists on the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on pregnancy outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate obstetric outcomes in pregnant women diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 upon hospital admission.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective descriptive study design.
  • RT-PCR testing of nasopharyngeal swabs for SARS-CoV-2 detection.
  • Analysis of obstetric results in confirmed cases.

Main Results:

  • 12 pregnant women tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 (0.64% of deliveries).
  • Most cases were asymptomatic (9) or mild (3); no severe illness or maternal deaths.
  • Observed complications included stillbirth (1), preterm labor (1), preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (1), and fetal growth restriction (1).
  • Four vaginal deliveries, two vacuum-assisted, and five cesarean sections (obstetric indications).

Conclusions:

  • SARS-CoV-2 infection is infrequent in hospitalized pregnant women.
  • The majority of infections are asymptomatic or mild.
  • Key gestational complications include stillbirth and preterm birth; no evidence of vertical transmission was found.
