Summary

Adding a low-density barium flush after a double-contrast barium enema (DCBE) significantly improves imaging of the sigmoid colon. This technique enhances visualization of diverticula and increases diagnostic confidence for polypoid defects.

Background:

  • Double-contrast barium enema (DCBE) is a standard imaging technique for the sigmoid colon.
  • Evaluating sigmoid diverticulosis and polypoid defects can be challenging with standard DCBE.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy of a low-density contrast material flush as an adjunct to DCBE for sigmoid colon imaging.
  • To improve visualization of diverticula and interpretation of polypoid defects.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 52 patients with sigmoid diverticulosis.
  • Patients underwent standard DCBE followed by an additional enema with either water or 1.5% low-density barium suspension.
  • Rectosigmoid radiographs were analyzed for luminal distention, interhaustral space visualization, diverticula definition, and polypoid defect interpretation.
