Abstract:
The upcoming decade of precision medicine for cancer is moving from the translation of specific genetic findings into clinically relevant improvement to the qualitative analyses of the genomic and immune tumor microenvironment, for an integrated treatment strategy in both metastatic and early disease.
Insights
Precision medicine in cancer care is advancing beyond genetic mutations. Future strategies will integrate analyses of the tumor microenvironment for improved early and metastatic disease treatments.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Genomics
- Immunology
Background:
- Precision medicine has historically focused on translating specific genetic findings into cancer treatments.
- The current paradigm is shifting towards a more comprehensive understanding of the tumor ecosystem.
Purpose of the Study:
- To outline the future direction of precision medicine in oncology.
- To emphasize the integration of genomic and immune analyses of the tumor microenvironment.
Main Methods:
- Qualitative analyses of the tumor microenvironment.
- Integration of genomic and immune data.
- Application to both early and metastatic cancer stages.
Main Results:
- Anticipated shift from genetic-specific to microenvironment-integrated treatment strategies.
- Development of comprehensive treatment approaches for diverse cancer stages.
Conclusions:
- The next decade of cancer precision medicine will leverage integrated analyses of the tumor microenvironment.
- This approach aims to enhance treatment strategies for both early-stage and metastatic cancers.

Cancer Therapies
However, cancer treatments can pose several challenges, as therapies used to kill cancer cells are generally also toxic to normal cells. Moreover, cancer cells mutate rapidly and can develop resistance to chemical agents or radiation therapy. Besides, all types of cancer cells may not respond to the same therapy. Some cancer cells respond to one...
